What is a Foundation Apprenticeship?
A Foundation Apprenticeship is designed for people who are not yet ready for a full apprenticeship and want a supported introduction to the workplace.
You will gain:
- Practical, hands-on experience on construction sites
- Core technical knowledge across key onsite trades
- Essential employability skills and behaviours
- English and maths support where required
These programmes bridge the gap between education and employment, helping you make informed decisions about your future career.
About the Onsite Trades Programme
This Foundation Apprenticeship focuses on core construction trades, including:
- Bricklaying
- Carpentry and joinery
- Plastering
You’ll work on a variety of projects, from domestic builds to large commercial developments, gaining valuable experience across the sector.
Typical activities include:
- Supporting construction teams on site
- Using tools, materials, and equipment safely
- Preparing work areas and maintaining site standards
- Learning basic construction techniques
- Working alongside other trades and site management
The programme ensures you develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to work safely and effectively in construction.

Funding and incentives:
- Up to £2,000 employer incentive per apprentice (subject to retention and progression)
- Government-funded training support

Employer requirements:
- Provide a genuine job role
- Support off-the-job training (minimum 187 hours)
- Offer mentoring and supervision
- Meet health & safety and employment standards

You’ll gain a strong foundation in construction while deciding which trade is right for you.
Entry Requirements
- Those aged 16–21 (or aged 15 if their birthday falls between the last Friday in June and 31 August).
- Those aged 22–24 with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan or who have been in local authority care.
- Those aged 22–24 who are prisoners or prison leavers.
- UK Resident
- Not Currently in full-time education
- Motivated to start a career in construction
No formal qualifications are required – this programme is designed to help you get started.
Progression Opportunities
On completion, learners can progress into:
- Level 2 or Level 3 apprenticeships
- Specialist trades (e.g. bricklayer, carpenter, plasterer)
- Full-time employment in construction
