About this course
Hot work is one of the biggest causes of fires in workplaces across the UK. Yet with the right training and awareness, these risks are entirely preventable. This course provides employees and contractors with the essential knowledge to perform hot work safely and confidently, helping organisations protect people, property, and productivity.
Learners will discover the hierarchy of control measures, how to complete a risk assessment, and when a hot work permit is required. It also covers welding and cutting safety procedures and how to work safely in confined spaces.
By the end of the training, your team will have the confidence to recognise hazards, take the right precautions, and perform hot work safely and responsibly, which helps your organisation stay compliant, reduce risks, and protect both your people and property.
SECTION 1
We start by exploring what “hot work” actually means and why it’s such an important safety concern. This section looks at real-life examples of hot work incidents, the most common hazards such as sparks, fumes and heat exposure, and the responsibilities of both employers and employees.
SECTION 2
Here we look at how to make hot work as safe as possible. We introduce the Hierarchy of Control, which is a simple step-by-step method for reducing risk, and discover the importance of safe systems of work (SSoW), risk assessments, and hot work permits. This section helps teams understand how to plan, prepare, and perform hot work safely.
SECTION 3
This section focuses on two of the most common types of hot work — welding and cutting. It offers practical advice on setting up a safe workspace, wearing the correct PPE, and following procedures when working in confined spaces. Understand how to stay safe while maintaining high standards of work.
