This Face Fit Testing (Qualitative) course ensures that workers using tight-fitting Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) are tested to confirm their mask provides an effective and reliable seal.
Test Overview
Face fit testing is a legal requirement in the UK for all employees who wear tight-fitting RPE. It confirms that the equipment not only fits correctly but also delivers the level of protection required for the task being performed.
Testing is carried out by a Fit2Fit accredited trainer, ensuring compliance with industry standards and HSE guidance.
Why This Test Matters
A poorly fitting respirator significantly reduces protection and can allow harmful airborne contaminants to be inhaled. This course helps ensure that unsuitable masks are identified and that each wearer is properly protected.
Without fit testing, an inadequate seal may go unnoticed, potentially exposing workers to serious health risks even when the correct RPE has been selected.
What is Qualitative Face Fit Testing?
Qualitative face fit testing is a method used to check that a mask seals properly to the wearer’s face. It is a pass/fail test based on the wearer’s ability to detect a test substance (such as taste or smell), indicating whether the seal is effective.
This method is typically used for disposable and half-mask respirators and plays a vital role in ensuring protection in hazardous environments.
What We Will Cover
- How to correctly wear and check RPE before use
- The importance of achieving a proper mask seal
- How to recognise suitable and unsuitable face fits
- The procedures involved in qualitative face fit testing
- How to carry out pre-use checks and inspections
- Understanding the risks of poorly fitted RPE
Who Requires a Test?
- Construction and site workers required to wear RPE
- Operatives working in dusty or hazardous environments
- Anyone required to wear a tight-fitting respirator at work
Test Details
- Duration: 20 - 30 minutes per test
- Accreditation: In-House (Test Adminstered by Fit2Fit Acredited Tester)
- Validity: 1 year
Entry Requirements
- Delegates must be clean shaven to ensure an effective seal
- No eating, drinking (except water), smoking, or chewing gum for at least 30 minutes before testing
Assessment & Certification
There is no formal written assessment. Learners will be guided through the correct procedures and expected to demonstrate understanding by completing the fit test process under supervision.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a record confirming the respirator type, make, model, and fit test result.
