Recruiting skilled, reliable talent in construction can be a challenge, particularly when the construction industry needs people who are ready to work, eager to learn and capable of progressing into long-term roles.

Foundation Apprenticeships offer employers a practical way to build a future workforce while supporting young people into the industry. Designed as a pre-apprenticeship programme, Foundation Apprenticeships give employers access to motivated individuals who have already developed core workplace skills and are ready to gain experience on site. It’s an opportunity to shape future talent, reduce recruitment risks and create a sustainable pipeline of skilled workers.

What is a Foundation Apprenticeship?

A Foundation Apprenticeship is a pre-apprenticeship programme that prepares learners for the workplace. It combines classroom learning with hands-on experience, helping people develop the essential skills employers are looking for. It’s an opportunity for learners to gain practical knowledge, improve employability and get a clear pathway into a full apprenticeship or job.

At The Skills Centre, Foundation Apprenticeships are tailored to employer needs, ensuring participants gain the skills construction businesses are actively looking for.

Why should employers take on a Foundation Apprentice?

Hiring a Foundation Apprentice isn’t just about giving someone a start - it’s a smart, strategic move for business. These learners come prepared with the basics, the right attitude, and the potential to grow into long-term, skilled employees.

Taking on a foundation apprentice means employers can:

  • Build a reliable talent pipeline for future trade apprenticeships and roles
  • Trial young talent on site with structured training and support
  • Reduce recruitment risk with employer-ready candidates

Employer funding is available (up to £2,000 per apprentice subject to eligibility) and training is fully supported and funded.

How The Skills Centre supports employers

The Skills Centre works with construction employers to deliver the Level 2 Foundation Apprenticeship in Onsite Trades.

We manage the recruitment, training and administration process, making it easy for employers to participate without additional pressure on internal teams.

Employers provide the real-world site experience, while we ensure learners are supported throughout the programme.

This means employers can focus on developing talent on site while we take care of the logistics.

Who are Foundation Apprenticeships for?

Foundation Apprenticeships are paid positions and are for younger people who will benefit from a wide range of experiences.

Our Foundation Apprenticeships are designed for school leavers aged 18-21 who want to make the first steps into a career in construction or those aged 22-24 who are a care giver, a prisoner or prison leaver or a learner with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

What skills do Foundation Apprentices gain?

At The Skills Centre, training is tailored to real employer needs, so learners are taught the skills companies are actually looking for.

This covers things like:

  • Core practical skills (e.g. tools, techniques, and safety in construction)
  • Employability skills like teamwork, communication, and time management
  • Industry knowledge to help you understand how the job works day-to-day

The benefits of a Foundation Apprenticeship for learners

Foundation Apprenticeships provide learners with the opportunity to earn while they learn, receiving the London Living Wage throughout the programme.

Participants gain valuable hands-on experience on a live construction site, developing practical skills while exploring the wide range of roles available across the industry.

The programme also offers a clear progression route into employment, helping learners take the next step towards a long-term career in construction.

On completion, learners achieve a Level 2 Foundation Apprenticeship qualification, equipping them with recognised skills and experience to support future career progression.

Does it lead to employment?

Progression into employment is a key aim of the programme.

Foundation Apprenticeships are designed to help participants move into:

  • A full apprenticeship
  • Employment within the construction industry
  • Further training if needed

For employers, this creates an opportunity to identify strong performers early and develop them into long-term members of the workforce.

Why Foundation Apprenticeships matter for construction employers

There is currently a huge skills shortage within the construction industry and businesses need a steady pipeline of skilled workers to meet demand and future-proof their workforce.

Foundation Apprenticeships provide a practical, low-risk way to bring new talent into the industry while giving employers the support needed to make it work.

By partnering with The Skills Centre, employers can help shape the next generation of construction professionals while strengthening their own recruitment strategy.
