Apprenticeship Funding 
If your business pays the Apprenticeship Levy, training can be funded via your digital account. For non-levy paying employers, we’ll help you access 95% government funding – and support with all the paperwork. Additional grants may be available to some learners. 

What's required from employers? 

  • A genuine job role is Steelfixing for the whole apprenticeship (minimum)
  • Commitment to support the apprentice's learning and off-the-job training, including releasing learners from site to attend training at one of our centres
  • Willingness to contribute to workplace assessments and mentoring (coaching for your mentors is available)
  • Compliance with relevant employment and health & safety standards

For Learners

Earn while you learn with a Steelfixing Apprenticeship 
Steelfixers play a vital role in major construction projects – placing and securing steel bars and mesh to reinforce concrete in buildings, bridges, roads and more. 

At The Skills Centre, you’ll learn hands-on skills in our training yards and classrooms, while gaining real-world experience on-site with an employer. Over 15–18 months, you’ll build the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to succeed in your role – all while being paid.

What you'll learn: 

Our Formwork Apprenticeship covers all essential Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs), including: 

  • Understanding technical drawings
  • Preparing and fixing steel reinforcement
  • Health and safety best practice
  • Working effectively in a team and on-site environment 

What is Off-the-Job Training? 

As part of your apprenticeship, you’ll spend time each month at The Skills Centre on ‘off-the-job’ training – this could be in the yard or classroom based. You may also complete addition off-the-job training through mentoring, shadowing or other training opportunities with your employer. It’s all logged and supports your development towards the apprenticeship standard. 

Functional Skills in English and Maths 

If you don't already have GCSEs in English and Maths, we'll support your to achieve Functional Skills Level 1 and work towards Level 2 - a valuable took for completing your apprenticeship. 

How your apprenticeship is assessed: 

To complete your apprenticeship, you'll: 

  • Build a portfolio of real-world site evidence
  • Complete practical and written assessments
  • Take part in a structured interview with an independent assessor
  • Meet Functional Skills and off-the-job training requirements 

Once all elements are complete, you’ll enter Gateway and undertake your End Point Assessment (EPA), where your skills will be independently evaluated. This includes: 

  • A practical assessment (up to 8 hours)
  • A multiple-choice knowledge test
  • A structured professional discussion about your work

Our partnership with Construct Group has shaped not only the delivery of our Steelfixing Apprenticeship but also the development of our Construct Bootcamps – intensive training programmes that prepare learners with practical skills and a two-week work placement.
