Encouraging Women into Construction

Posted Thu, 19th February 2026 Author Anna Hart Read Time 4 minutes

Only 15% of the construction industry is currently represented by women. At The Skills Centre we pride ourselves on providing opportunities for all to get into the industry through our funded training provision.

Across February and March we have programmes dedicated to getting more women into the industry across 5 locations.

The Lower Thames Crossing will connect Kent and Essex with a new road and tunnel under the Thames. But it’s more than just a road — it’s an opportunity to open up long-term careers for local people. There’s a national shortage of skilled construction workers needed to build the pipeline of planned projects across the UK. The Lower Thames Crossing will hire at least 45% of our workforce from within 20 miles of the route. We’re supporting local people to gain the skills for upcoming roles on this project and other regional developments.
