Learners Support Surrey Docks Farm Ahead of 50th Anniversary

In preparation for its upcoming 50th anniversary this summer, Surrey Docks Farm has received vital support from our learners at The Skills Centre. As part of this initiative, both our apprentices and bootcamp learners have been assisting with crucial infrastructure improvements to ensure the farm is ready for its milestone celebration.

This initiative is being led by The Skills Centre at Canada Water, a partnership between The Skills Centre, British Land, and Southwark Council. The centre is dedicated to helping people from the local area access employment opportunities in the construction sector—transforming lives by bringing local opportunities to local people.

Hands-On Training with Real Impact

Over a two-day work placement, learners Antony Foday, Mark Moore, Ripley Carson Blasse, and Bradley Garrity provided essential labour support, helping to enhance accessibility, safety, and sustainability across the farm.

One of the key projects they tackled was the repair of the farm’s walkways. By smoothing uneven surfaces, they have made the paths safer for all visitors, including those using wheelchairs and pushchairs. This effort helps prevent slips and trips while ensuring a more accessible experience for everyone.

To promote sustainability, the learners used recycled materials provided by FM Conway to repair the concrete surfaces. This eco-friendly approach not only strengthens the farm’s infrastructure but also reduces its carbon footprint.

Enhancing Safety and Sustainability

In addition to improving the walkways, the learners installed new fencing around the stables. The fencing, made from sustainable and durable materials, enhances security while preserving the farm’s rustic charm. Another significant upgrade involved reinstating pig pens using reusable plywood, reinforcing our commitment to environmentally responsible construction practices.

Industry Support and Collaboration

Projects like this are made possible through strong partnerships with local employers. Our apprentices are employed by FM Conway, Galldris, Keltbray, and JP Dunn, who have played a crucial role in their training and development. Additionally, HG, the employer attached to this bootcamp, played a key role, supporting learners by organising interviews and site visits to Elephant Park. We are incredibly grateful for their continued support.

Building Skills for a Bright Future

At The Skills Centre, we are committed to providing learners with real-world experience in a variety of construction settings. Our programmes give both apprentices and bootcamp learners the chance to develop practical skills on live projects, from community-focused initiatives like Surrey Docks Farm to large-scale infrastructure developments.

With new enrolments coming up soon, now is the perfect time to start your journey in construction.
