Emily's Story

We had the chance to catch up with Emily Villas, who recently completed one of our bootcamps.

How did you first learn about The Skills Centre, and what caught your interest?

I learned about The Skills Centre through Hackney Council, which was assisting me with my mental health and job search. During our discussions about obtaining my CSCS card, we came across The Skills Centre. It immediately appealed to me because of its strong support for young people beginning their careers in construction.

What specific aspects of the programme did you enjoy the most, and why did they stand out to you?

I thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on experience, as it gave me a practical understanding of what it’s truly like to work on-site. Being able to apply the skills I was learning in a real-world setting made the training much more engaging and helped me feel more prepared for a career in construction.

What tips would you give to someone considering enrolling in this programme?

Attendance is essential! It’s important to join the programme with a clear and focused mindset, ready to learn and engage fully. If you are serious about pursuing a career in construction, this programme is the right opportunity for you.

Now that you have completed the programme, in what ways do you think the qualifications will help you in your career or personal development?

I can now begin my career in construction with a solid understanding of the industry. This program has also greatly helped me improve my social skills, something I’ve often struggled with. It has given me the opportunity to meet new friends, whom I will stay in touch with.

What inspired you to join this programme in the first place?

I was eager to obtain my CSCS card because my goal was to become a solar panel installer. Now, I am also open to exploring a variety of apprenticeships within the construction industry.

After completing the programme, what is your overall impression of your experience?

I have gained a great deal of knowledge in Health and Safety, especially since I was completely new to the industry. The staff have been incredibly supportive and encouraging throughout my journey. They took the time to understand my needs and ensured that everything was in place to make me feel comfortable. I have also remained in contact with The Skills Centre, as they are assisting me in finding employment opportunities.
