I work as an NVQ Assessor at The Skills Centre. My responsibilities include providing candidates with the necessary support and guidance to enable them to demonstrate their knowledge and meet the qualification standards.

How did you get into construction?

“I enrolled myself onto a Level 1 Carpentry course at Lewisham College. I was offered an Apprenticeship position at a careers fair and I then qualified as Carpenter. I met with Jon White, the SCSC Manager at Elephant Park and seeked his advice on how to develop my career. Once I completed the NVQ Diploma Level 2 in formwork, we decided the best route for me would be to train as an Assessor.”

What do you most enjoy about construction?

“I like how it is a constantly changing environment and that you’re around so many different people. It’s great how you cross paths all the time and move around the different sites around the City!”

What advice would you give someone outside of the industry who wants to start a career in Construction?

‘I think it’s absolutely the best industry to be in because there is so much growth within it. It is seen as a ‘dirty job’ but it’s not just about being on the tools, there’s so much scope!’
