What is Rainscreen Cladding?
Rainscreen cladding is an external panel façade system that protects a building's backing wall from the full force of the weather.
In a nutshell: Rainscreen cladding protects a building's backing wall from the elements.
Cladding systems can also improve thermal performance and enhance a building's appearance.
The Centre for Window and Cladding Technology (CWCT) defines a rainscreen cladding system as:
‘a wall comprising an outer skin of panels and an airtight insulated backing wall separated by a ventilated cavity. Some water may penetrate into the cavity but the rainscreen is intended to provide protection from direct rain’.
Typically rainscreens are formed of relatively thin, pre-fabricated panels.
The rainscreen itself simply prevents significant amounts of water from penetrating into the wall construction.
Thermal insulation, airtightness and structural stability are provided by the second, inner part of the wall construction.
The UK construction industry is experiencing a shortage of qualified and specialist cladding removal and installation experts following changes to the labour market over recent years. However, the demand for cladding skills in the UK has increased driven by new legislation, targets and funding for both sustainability and fire safety.
