Before joining the Youth Trailblazer Path2Apprenticeships programme, Francis Middleton knew he wanted a hands-on career but struggled to find the right starting point. Lacking confidence and unsure of what employers were looking for, he turned to The Skills Centre for guidance. Through the support of his tutor and the practical insights gained on the course, Francis has transformed his outlook. Now working as a Driver’s Mate and actively pursuing a trade apprenticeship, Francis shares how the programme helped him trade uncertainty for a clear, motivated path forward.
What were you doing before you joined The Skills Centre Birmingham?
Before joining the Youth Trailblazer Path2Apprenticeships programme, I’ve always been interested in practical, hands-on work but didn’t really know where to start or how to get into a trade properly. I was struggling with confidence and direction. I didn’t know what route was best for me, and I wasn’t sure if I had the right skills or knowledge to start an apprenticeship. I also wasn’t fully aware of what employers were looking for.
Did you have any pre-conceptions about Construction coming into the course?
Yes, I thought construction was mainly heavy lifting and long hours on-site. I also assumed you had to already know a lot before joining. Some bits were true - construction can be physical but there’s a lot more to it. There’s planning, teamwork, learning technical skills, and understanding safety. I realised there are roles for different types of people, not just those who already know everything.
What difference has completing the course made to you?
My tutor was Chris, and they were supportive. They explained things clearly, helped me build my confidence, and gave honest feedback on how I could improve. They also encouraged me to push myself and apply for opportunities. I have now secured a job as a Drivers mate, and I am now looking to get into an apprenticeship to further my skills and career.
What are you doing now?
Since finishing the programme I have secured a job as a Drivers mate, and the skills I gained through the Youth Trailblazer programme have allowed me to look to get into an apprenticeship to further my skills and career.
How has the Youth Trailblazer course impacted your confidence?
My confidence has improved massively. Before, I wasn’t sure where I fit in, but now I feel capable, motivated, and ready to move into an apprenticeship. I feel proud of what I’ve achieved.
