This free construction training programme in Kent supports learners with complex barriers to education and employment to access sustainable opportunities in the construction sector. The programme is delivered in partnership with O'Halloran & O'Brien Ltd - a leading contractor and provider of Groundworks, Concrete Frames and Highways Maintenance work across the UK.

Who is the course for?

Our construction pre-employment course is a fantastic way of gaining the skills and qualifications you need to start a career in construction in Kent.

Training is delivered from the OHOB Training Academy in Gravesend, and includes: 1 week classroom based training, 1 week practical training, 1 week work experience with OHOB. The course leads to real job opportunities with OHOB, one of the UK's leading contractors specialising in Groundworks, Concrete Frames and Highways Maintenance.

This course will not only help you build new skills in the classroom and out in the yard, it will also place you right in the action on a live construction site. Following your work experience and successful completion of the course, you'll receive an interview for one of OHOB's open construction jobs, with pay starting at £12p/h.

Candidates must be living in the UK, over the age of 19, unemployed, or economically inactive (not claiming any benefits) to access funding.

How is the course delivered?

Interactive training, classroom discussions, case studies, teamwork, Individual/group presentations, yard-based practical training, on-site experience and self-study outside of the classroom. Paper and computer based testing will be required for completion of some qualifications.

  • Level 1 Award in Health and safety in a construction environment
  • Level 1 Award in Basic Construction Skills
  • Personal Wellbeing in Construction
  • Entry Level 3 Award in Environmental Awareness & Sustainability
  • CSCS Test (a vital requirement for access to construction sites)
  • Manual Handling
  • Vehicle Marshal

Entry requirements

Candidates must meet the below eligibility for the Pre-employment Programme.

  • A resident in the UK/Europe for at least the last 3 years
  • Be aged 19+
  • Have a valid National Insurance Number
  • Hold photographic ID & proof of address
  • Must be unemployed or earning less than £17k per annum
  • Candidates must also be able to commit to attending the required times for the full duration of the programme (absence is not permitted).

Progression

Achievement of this pre-employment programme provides opportunities to progress to further qualifications training and job prospects.

These courses are delivered in partnership with OHOB, providing training linked to real employment opportunities and skills gaps as well as ongoing careers support from our dedicated Jobs Coaches.

The Skills Centre also offers further construction qualification routes, including apprenticeships, short courses (including SSSTS and SMSTS) and Construction NVQs.
